Ex-Squash Pros, organisers of the maiden edition of Sunfit Under-13 & Under-16 National Squash tournament has expressed satisfaction with the number of kids that will be participating at the competition.

In a chat with SportingLife.ng during the registration and screening of the participating kids held at the Sunfit Fitness, Spar and Accommodation in Amuwo Odofin Estate, FESTAC in Lagos State on Thursday, tournament director, Wilson Egberipou said the aim of the competition is to discover new talents and age cheats will not be tolerated.

“We have about 100 players from Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Oyo, Kaduna, Abia, Enugu, Kaduna , Lagos State and so on. So most states from South-West, South-East, South-South and North-Central are well represented here and the only zone that is missing is North East.

“This tournament is designed to identify new talents at a very tender age and prepare them to become future champions. We had a thorough screening process whereby we go through their birth certificates. Apart from that we look at some other things in case a child wants to falsify his age by presenting a fake birth certificate, we have other things to consider concerning their ages. But to our best knowledge , we have tried all we could to ensure that the players that are actually within the age category are allowed to play in this tournament.

“So at the end of the competition, we should be able to discover new talents that we can now focus on to develop them for future national or international championship.

“This is not going to be the only tournament; we have another one coming up next week, the second edition of EX-Squash Pro National tournament. So from the series of tournaments that we will be having this year, we will be able to groom these players and put some of them in camp that will now represent the country in international championships,” Egberipou, who is also a board member of the Nigeria Squash Federation, told SportingLife.ng.

The competition sponsored by Sunfit Fitness, Spar and Accommodation will end on the 14th April, 2018.
