Super Cup: Costa fired up

Atletico Madrid take on rivals Real Madrid in the Super Cup in Estonia on Wednesday night, and striker Diego Costa certainly seems fired up for the occasion.

Costa was calling the shots in training on Tuesday as he issued instructions to his team-mates at the A. Le Coq Arena.

Having won the Europa League last season, Atletico will take on bitter rivals Real, who were victorious in the Champions League, in an intriguing clash.

Manager Diego Simeone put his team, including French forward Antoine Griezmann, through their paces as they prepared to take on Real.

Simeone says emotion rather than technical ability could decide the fate of the game.

The Argentine is suspended from the touchline for the match after being sent off in the Europa League semi-final against Arsenal, a competition his team went on to win in May leading to this confrontation against Champions League winners Real.

The important thing is the emotion, the hope. This game could be decided on an emotional level,’ Simeone told reporters on Tuesday.

The game could see Atletico face former player Thibaut Courtois, who may make his debut in goal for Zinedine Zidane’s side.

Atletico have a stand-out goalkeeper of their own, however, in Jan Oblak, who was among those present at the training session.

Last season Atletico finished in second place in La Liga, three points ahead of Real, although both teams trailed champions Barcelona by a considerable distance.

There have been several new arrivals at Atletico this summer, including Thomas Lemar, Gelson Martins and Nikola Kalinic.

However, Simeone says it does not necessarily mean his team is stronger and ready to compete for trophies against La Liga giants Real and Barcelona.

The arrival of good players guarantees good individuals but not a better team until we are all working in the same direction,’ added Simeone.

‘Obviously our budgets are not the same. But in terms of motivation we never feel beneath anyone. In this match we will do everything we can to take the game where we want it.’

Atletico get their La Liga season underway on Monday night when they face Valencia away.
