Legendary WTA tennis stars Venus Williams and Martina Hingis are heading for South Africa to compete in the Africa Cares Tennis tournament in Johannesburg next month.

The exhibition will also feature Simona Halep, a two-time Grand Slam champion from Romania, and rising South African tennis sensation Khololwam Montsi. Montsi is currently ranked 780th on the ATP Tour rankings and will be in action in the mixed doubles segment.

American Williams and Swiss Hingis are both former world No 1 players, with seven and five singles Grand Slams respectively behind their names. The other players participating will be announced over the next two weeks.

Organisers said the aim of the event is to promote tennis in South Africa, as well as a vehicle in the fight against gender-based violence.
