Thiago Silva pens new Chelsea contract after UCL win

Thiago Silva has put pen to paper on a one-year Chelsea contract extension a week after winning the Champions League.

The Brazilian defender, who left Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer last summer, signed an initial one-year deal with Chelsea with the option of a further season – and the club have exercised that option.

Silva made 23 Premier League starts in his maiden season in English football at the age of 36 – and while suffered injury problems and was forced off early in last week’s Champions League Final triumph over Manchester City in Porto, his experience has proved vital to the Blues’ success.

“When we brought Thiago Silva in last summer, we knew we were adding a world-class player to the squad,” said Chelsea Marina Granovskaia.

“Thiago has duly shown everyone at Chelsea his immense quality throughout this season, and he has had a huge influence on and off the pitch for us.

“We said when he signed that we hoped Thiago would add new trophies to his impressive list of honours, and he has done just that with our success in the Champions League this weekend.

“We now hope that he carries on in exactly the same fashion in the coming year.”

Silva’s extension comes hours after the club confirmed that manager Thomas Tuchel’s deal had been extended by two years through to June 2024.
