Three Lessons from Nigeria, Iceland Encounter
• Confidence Ahead Argentina Tie
An improved Super Eagles will now approach Tuesday’s crucial match against Argentina in the Group D
fixture of the ongoing FIFA World Cup not as an underdogs.
While Eagles on Friday won their second match in the group against Iceland, Argentina lost against
Croatia and are yet to record a win in the tournament.
The clash at Saint Petersburg is one the Eagles want to win to break the jinx against the South
Americans.
• Effective Tactical Changes
Gernot Rohr accepted criticisms after Eagles lost their first match against Croatia and made
corrections with effective tactical changes in his first eleven.
This was seen as Victor Moses played at the right back and pacy Ahmed Musa starting upfront.
Rohr must have also yielded to Jose Mourinho’s advice of fielding Captain Mikel Obi as defensive
midfielder in the Iceland match as against him playing as a play maker.
The 3-5-2 formation paid off with the victory which Rohr is likely to stick to against Argentina.
• An organised Eagles defence
Kudos should be given to the defenders for covering the rear perfectly unlike the Eagles first match
against Croatia where they made costly defensive mistakes. The defenders showed better understanding
and the Iceland strikers at bay especially in the second half.
There were no mistake on set pieces.
