Tianjin Teda/Dalian fixture: Mikel doubtful after missing training

Super Eagles captain, John Mikel Obi is doubtful for Wednesday’s home fixture against Dalian Yifang after failing to participate in Tuesday’s training for Chinese club Tianjin Teda.

Reports from China indicate  that the Nigerian who has been dropped from this month’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against South Africa jogged on the sidelines.

His teammates and foreign players Johnathan, Frank Acheampong and Felix Bastians were part of the training which puts them in a good position to be considered by Tianjin coach Uli Stielike.

Although no reason was given for Mikel’s non-participation, it still raises concerns that he is still battling fitness issues. The player has not been regular for Tianjin since returning from the FIFA World Cup in June.

Two weeks ago, Mikel scored his second goal in six months even though he ended up on the losing side against Shanghai Shehua who won 4-2 at the Tianjin Olympic Center Stadium.

They now swim in relegation waters as they languish in the 15th position on the 16-team table with 29 points with two matches left to play.
