Tokyo 2020: Quadri, Amusan, others get IOC scholarship

As part of efforts to prepare athletes to qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games in Japan, the international Olympic Committee (IOC) through the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) has awarded scholarships to Aruna Quadri, Tobi Amusan and nine others across five sports.

According to IOC, the scholarship was meant to assist elite athletes selected and proposed by their respective National Olympic Committees (NOCs) in their preparation and qualification for the Games of the XXXII Olympiad, Tokyo 2020, with a particular focus on athletes and NOCs with the greatest needs.

Athletics, wrestling, weightlifting, table tennis and taekwondo are the five events that would benefit from the gesture and the support for each athlete in every quarter (four months) is $2560 and it is expected to help the athletes access to adequate training facilities, specialised coaching, regular medical and scientific assistance, accident and illness insurance, board and lodging costs and travel to Olympic qualification competitions.

According to IOC, the athletes have been receiving the support from January 2018 and it will be terminated after the Tokyo Olympic Games in August 2020.

The process of selection took off by nominations from the respective federations and these nominations were then forwarded to the Olympic Solidarity, while the Olympic Solidarity in liaison with the respective International Federations assessed each individual applicant and awarded those who have the best chances of participating in the forthcoming Olympics.

Aside Quadri and Amusan, other athletes that are benefiting from the IOC’s gesture include Odunayo Adekuoroye (wrestling), Aminat Adeniyi (wrestling), Blessing Oborududu (wrestling), Nathaniel Glory Onome (athletics), Nathaniel Samson (athletics), Adesanmi Oluwatoyin (weightlifting), Olajide Omotayo (table tennis), Adamu Abubakar (taekwondo) and Otuadinma Uzoamaka (taekwondo).

To become Olympic scholarship holders, athletes must demonstrate their potential at national and international level so that their NOCs can select them and send their candidatures to Olympic Solidarity. The candidatures are then analysed by Olympic Solidarity in close cooperation with the International Federations (IFs). The final allocation decision lies with Olympic Solidarity, which then informs the NOC concerned.
