Tokyo: Baptism of fire for Zambia as women soccer begins

 

African Champions and flag bearers to the women soccer event of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics Zambia received baptism of fire on Wednesday after a 10-3 demolition by Netherlands.

Zambia who emerged champions in the African qualifiers for the Olympics edging out Cameroon after both countries played aggregate 4-4 ,were practically overwhelmed by their Dutch counterparts but managed to net three goals as consolation. Zambian captain Barbra Banda accounted for the three goals.

The Netherland versus Zambia encounter recorded the highest score line producing 13 goals.

The Zambian ladies were not however the only ones that sang lamentation songs as World Cup champions USA who were stopped in the last Olympics in Rio by Sweden went down again 3-0 to the Sweden in their opener.

The US team who had vowed to ensure that thunder does not strike twice will no doubt fight to the finish to realise that dream though it is too early to lose hope with just only one match played.

In other matches played Wednesday Team GB beat Chile 2-0, Brazil hammered China 5-0. Australia beat neighbours and next Women World cup host New Zealand 2-2 while Canada in a lets dig fashion held hosts Japan to a 1-1 draw.

Zambia will on Saturday face China while US will take on New Zealand.  Recall that perenial African Champions Nigeria failed to qualify in both men and women soccer event of this year’s Olympics. Falcons were edged out in the third round by Ivory Coast.
