Tottenham and Man City fans can attend Wembley final in pilot event

A limited number of Tottenham and Manchester City fans will be allowed into Wembley Stadium for this month’s Carabao Cup final, while local residents and workers will attend the FA Cup semi-final between Leicester and Southampton at the national stadium.

Brent Council has confirmed that both matches will be pilot events for the return of supporters, who will be permitted to attend under socially-distanced conditions if they provide a negative Covid test.

The FA Cup semi-final on April 18 will be the first time fans have been allowed in the national stadium in over a year.

From mid-May, up to 10,000 supporters are set to return to grounds as part of the government’s roadmap to lifting coronavirus restrictions but a number of pilot events will be held in advance, likely with crowds from 4,000 to 8,000.

Brent Council, the London authority covering Wembley, wrote to residents this week asking them to register their interest in attending the matches.

For the FA Cup semi-final, tickets will only be allocated to locals, including Brent Council staff, NHS and other health workers, teachers and pupils over the age of 18 and residents of Wembley Park – the area immediately surrounding the stadium.

“These groups have been chosen as they are largely already in regular testing regimes,” read the council’s letter.

The Carabao Cup final, a week later on April 25, will have a larger capacity and be open to the same group, as well as some Spurs and City supporters.

It remains unclear if City supporters will be allowed to travel from Manchester for the match.

Each attendee will be given two match tickets and must organise and return a negative lateral flow Covid-19 test before attending the match, undertaken 24 hours in advance, and show proof in order to enter the stadium.

They must also agree to taking a PCR Covid-19 home test after attending the event.

City’s win over Aston Villa in the last season’s Carabao Cup final on March 1, 2020 was the last time supporters were allowed into Wembley.

The other FA Cup semi-final between Chelsea and City will be played behind closed doors on April 17.
