Transfer window: Coutinho joins Aston Villa on permanent transfer from Barcelona

Philippe Coutinho has joined Aston Villa on a permanent deal, signing a contract until 2026 with the Premier League club.

The 29-year-old has been at Villa Park since January when he arrived on a six-month loan, but that has now been made permanent for an undisclosed fee.

The Brazil international has played 16 times in the Premier League during his loan stint with Villa, scoring four times and providing three assists.

Villa boss Steven Gerrard, who played with Coutinho in their Liverpool days, is thrilled to bring in the playmaker permanently as he looks to build an ambitious Villains squad.

Gerrard said: “This is a brilliant signing for Aston Villa. Phil is a model professional and his impact on the group has been very clear since he joined in January.

‘With the way he conducts himself on and off the pitch, he’s also a valuable role model for our younger players who can only benefit from his experience.

‘As we look to build towards next season, it is incredible to work at a club that executes its business so decisively and smoothly.’

Coutinho appears to have enjoyed his return to the Premier League and his linking up with Gerrard again.

Speaking in February, the Brazilian told Sky Sports: ‘I really like it here. I missed the Premier League and the people here. They treated me really well and I missed this. It’s good to be back here.

‘We spoke a lot before I came. He spoke about the club, the ambitions here, the fans, his ambitions and for sure it was what I wanted. I decided very quickly. I’m here now and I’m very happy at the moment.’
