Transfer window: Leicester City sign Nathan Opoku

Leicester City have confirmed the signing of Nathan Opoku from FDM Field Masters Sporting Club.

Opoku has made the switch from the Ghanaian side after a strong spell in the American college system but will join City’s Belgian sister club OH Leuven on loan for the rest of the season first. The Foxes are keen for Opoku to adapt to the demands of European football before bringing him into the first team fold at the King Power.

Opoku has become City’s third signing of the January transfer window following the arrivals of Victor Kristiansen and Tete, with Harry Souttar expected to become the fourth later today. So, here is everything you need to know on City’s latest addition.

At this stage Opoku remains very much an unknown quantity, with the 21-year-old first having attracted admiring glances during his time at Lindsey Wilson College. He netted 19 goals in 19 matches there, which prompted Syracuse University to make their move for the talented attacker.

Opoku picked up where he left off upon his arrival at Syracuse, displaying both talent in front of goal and creativity with 11 goals and eight assists in 25 matches last season. He played a key role in helping Syracuse win the NCAA Division 1 Men’s Soccer Championship for the first time at the end of 2022, with the youngster scoring in the final.

Opoku has represented Ghana at youth level and according to Sky Sports News, rejected the opportunity to be first pick in the MLS draft in favour of a move to Leicester.
