Transfer window: Rangers defender Bassey earnestly waiting to hear from Aston Villa

Rangers defender, Calvin Bassey, is keen to hear positive follow-up information from Aston Villa.

The defender currently in Dallas in the United States with the members of Nigeria national team, has made 50 appearances across all competitions this season, as Rangers reached the Europa League final. Following his impressive performances at Ibrox, at both left-back and centre-half, the 22-year-old has been the subject of several reports surrounding a possible transfer.

Villa have been quick off the mark in the transfer market, completing moves for both Philippe Coutinho and Boubacar Kamara, as well as agreeing a deal for Sevilla centre-back Diego Carlos. And Bassey has also been touted as a target for Steven Gerrard, with the Villa boss having signed the defender for Rangers from Leicester City’s academy in 2020.

Sky Sports says Bassey would be “open to talking to Villa”. While Gerrard’s side are reported to have had scouts in attendance to watch the defender as Rangers lifted the Scottish Cup against Hearts last weekend and are hoping to “pursue a deal quickly” in order to fight off competition from other sides.
