Tuchel can understand Chilwell being ‘anxious

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel can understand Ben Chilwell being “anxious”.

So far under Tuchel the £50million summer buy from Leicester has made only two starts, against Wolves and Sheffield United, and was hauled off in both after 72 and 62 minutes, respectively.

The Blues supremo, unbeaten in his first five games, declared: “If Ben is anxious, I can absolutely understand – because he’s had tight decisions against him.

“We chose Marcos where we played with five because he was more familiar with the position under Antonio Conte. Then he had a very good match against Burnley and scored a decisive goal.

“From there it was hard to come back for Ben. I had a talk with him before Tottenham and told him: ‘You have to trust me now. I see your potential, I see your talent’.

“Chilly’s a very nice, reflective, intelligent guy. It’s possible he thinks a lot about this situation.

“Hopefully not too much because he can trust in himself first of all – and in us staff to keep pushing him.

“Sometimes it takes time and there are hard decisions. Then, it’s my job not to lose these players.

At the same time we wanted a start where we’re fair to everybody – and don’t judge anybody by the amount of money the club has spent – but to give everyone the feeling it’s a fresh start.

“I do not care what we paid for the guys, or what they earn. I couldn’t care less.”
