Tuchel rejects Werner’s criticism

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has rejected criticism of Timo Werner this season.

For victory over Leicester City, Werner had two goals disallowed and won the decisive penalty.

The German received plenty of support from the returning Stamford Bridge faithful and Tuchel believes a familiarity with his surroundings stands the striker in good stead for next season and beyond.

“He is still young and can still improve,” said Tuchel today. “This is what we demand from him, not only week by week but also when there will be a bit of time to reflect and rest for him.

“I am sure that he can take the next steps. Next year he is not new anymore, he knows where he’s coming back to, he knows the environment and his team-mates, he knows what he’s up against and how to adapt and this will help him. We try to push the process right now because we need him.”

Tuchel also pointed out that, unlike many of his striking contemporaries, Werner does not take penalties for the Blues and this should be factored in to any comparisons being made.

If Jorginho’s converted spot-kicks were added to Werner’s tally this term, the 25-year-old would be up to 20 goals for the season.

“Don’t forget that many goalscorers in Europe shoot penalties for their teams,” added Tuchel. “It’s very common that they reach these high numbers with penalties.

“If you add the penalties that we had to his numbers maybe everybody would be absolutely delighted with his first year.”
