Tyson Fury’s unknown brother Roman set boxing debut

Tyson Fury’s unknown brother is set to make his professional boxing debut despite having never fought as an amateur.

Cruiserweight Roman Fury will appear on VIP Boxing’s double title card at Doncaster Racecourse on October 8, with his opponent set to be confirmed soon. Even though he has such limited experience, Fury is represented by Jimmy Harrington and trains with brothers Tyson and Tommy, with the former once stating: “He’s an aspiring cruiserweight champion of the future.”

The latest Fury to enter the ring will do so in a four-round bout and in the process become the ninth member of the family to box professionally.

However, he is happy to begin his career away from the spotlight, telling VIP Boxing: “I don’t want to rush things. I don’t want to box on big bills just because I carry the ‘Fury’ name.

“You can’t run before you can walk and the VIP Boxing shows are ideal for me to learn my ringcraft and build. I could have had amateur fights, but I am around professional boxers and learning that side of things.

“Amateur fights would have been a nice experience, but I would rather go into the pro ranks and learn. These shows will improve me.

“I started late and don’t have time to waste two or three years in the amateurs so I have to progress quickly. Tyson, Tommy, our Dad and Jimmy all said just get straight into professional boxing.”

Prior to taking boxing seriously, Fury had played rugby league but made the decision to train with his world champion brother during lockdown after ballooning to 19 stone.

Whilst he knows his name will mean he is under the spotlight, he is not fazed by the weight of expectation, adding: “Being criticised is in my thoughts, but that comes with my name. People look at Tyson and assume we’re all as good as him.

“I have not had any amateur experience so I am doing it cleverly. No matter what I do people are going to criticise so I have to get on with it and do my own thing.
