UCL: Chelsea pair out of Atletico Madrid showdown

Chelsea will be again be without Thiago Silva and Tammy Abraham for their crunch Champions League showdown with Atletico Madrid.

Blues manager Thomas Tuchel has said he does not want to risk rushing the duo back from injury before the upcoming international break.

It means Silva and Abraham will miss Wednesday’s second leg against Atletico.

Chelsea, who go into the game at Stamford Bridge with a 1-0 lead from the first leg, will also be without the suspended Mason Mount and Jorginho.

Tuchel said: “Two key players for us, especially Mason for his offensive skills and his power offensive wise to break the lines with dribbles and shots, but it is a small line between argumentation and excuse.

“They were important players so far. We have a group with which we compete.

“Now is the challenge to adapt and find solutions. We play without the two guys and also Tammy Abraham and Thiago Silva. We miss four players. That makes the selection easy as we can choose 23 players. We can use the whole squad and make five subs.

“We are very aware Atletico is one of the teams to give away the fewest chances in all Europe.

Pressed on when Silva and Abraham will be fit to return Tuchel said: “With the national break now coming I don’t take too much risk when I say after the national break they will be rejoining.”
