Union Berlin fear injured Awoniyi will be sidelined for long

Nigeria junior international and Union Berlin ace Taiwo Awoniyi may not return to action in a jiffy according to club Managing director Oliver Ruhnert.

The on-loan Liverpool ace sustained a thigh injury which management fear will force him to the sidelines for extended period.

“We fear a long absence,” said Union managing director Oliver Ruhnert.

It’s a blow for Union Berlin, with Awoniyi having scored five goals and provided four assists so far this season.

The striker’s loan does not include a buy-back option. Awoniyi who remains optimistic that he will one day play for parent club Liverpool, has been a typical journey man since joining the Reds in August 2015 for at a cost of   £400,000 but was immediately loaned out to FSV Frankfurt.

His loan move to FSV Frankfurt flagged off a series of other loan deals that took him to NEC, Mouscron, Gent, Mainz and finally Union Berlin joining the  side in September last year.

At the international level Awoniyi represented Nigeria at the 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup and went on to win the tournament, scoring four goals during the competition. He also represented Nigeria at the 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup in New Zealand after winning the 2015 African U-20 Championship in Senegal.
