Valencia ‘offer players IOU notes’ as club faces financial crisis

Valencia have offered IOU notes to their players as a promise to cover their wages as the club’s financial
crisis continues.

The coronavirus pandemic has caused huge disruption to the LaLiga side, with their players now facing not being paid until further notice.

New manager Javi Gracia was only appointed on July 27, but now faces a mammoth task in keeping the dressing room happy, after they were left annoyed with the club’s plans to offer them IOUs for missed wage payments.

The financial director for Valencia, Inma Ibanez, met with the squad on Monday before their training session to
explain the club’s financial situation and how they plan to adapt the payment structure.

Anil Murphy, president of Valencia, was not at the meeting after he already spoke with the disgruntled squad over the weekend just hours after he released a controversial open letter regarding the club’s situation.

‘We must lower salaries, which means selling players who have two years or less on their contracts and high salaries. In addition, some are ageing and are prone to injuries. We can not keep them and we should not,’ the
president wrote in the open letter published by MARCA.

Just days before, reports suggested that the Spanish outfit alerted Premier League clubs as they placed their
entire squad, other than Jose Gaya, on the transfer list.

The club have already sold winger Ferran Torres to Manchester City in a deal worth £37.5million. Whilst
Torres’ departure was expected, it did not hurt the fans as much as the double sale for two key players.

The club also explained former Arsenal midfielder Francis Coquelin had moved to Villarreal in a deal that is
expected to also see their rivals snap up Spain international Dani Parejo for a combined total of under £11.5million.
