Visually impaired sports competition holds April 14

The 24th yearly Inter -House Sports competition of the Vocational Training Centre for the visually impaired will hold on April 14 at the Yaba College of Technology Sports Field.

Two houses , Blue and Red, with 29 students in each House , will participate in events that include Tor Ball, Rounder’s Game ( male and female), Shot put ( male and female ), Long jump ( male and female ), and Searching game. Others are March Past, Old students race, Staff race, Executive Council Members/Friends of the society race, Go ball (Demonstration) and Tug of War.

Speaking at the occasion to herald the event, the Chairman, Inter-House Sports Committee, Major Kehinde Danmole (Rtd) said the activities were being organised to enhance the total development of the trainees physically, mentally and spiritually.

“When they do sports, they are kept physically fit and healthy . They develop the sense of social interaction with one another and the ability to compete in issues of life at anytime.

“The sporting activities, which is a yearly event started the resumption of the school for this year in January when practices started early enough. The committee has been meeting on several occasion to organise a successful outing, ” he said.

Danmole added that officials of the Lagos State Sports Council have been supportive in the training and engagement of special people’ s coaches for the trainees.

He, however, call on other corporate bodies and individuals that are yet to contribute their quota, to do so, so as to give hope to the visually impaired ones that after all there is ability in disability.

According to the organisers, the major sponsors of this year’s event include FBN Merchant Bank, Standard Chartered Bank, Lagos City Club , Access Bank , Lagos State Ministry of Education among others.

Vocational Training Centre offers rehabilitation programme to the blinds with the aim of training them physically, spiritually , socially mentally and morally.

A student of the College, Lateef Azeez who showed excitement over the forthcoming Inter-House Sports, urged fellow to come out en mas to make the D-day eventful.

“I can’t wait to participate in this year Inter-House Sport. So excited to be one of the students shortlisted for the Long jump,” he said.
