WCQ: Nigeria was only an option, insists Netherlands forward Danjuma

Villarreal sensation Arnold Danjuma has stated that he loves Nigeria, but the Oranje is the team after his heart.

The Dutch youth international was rumored to be interested in switching allegiance to the three-time African champions in the past.

However the rumor was put to bed, after the former Bournemouth winger was handed a late call up to the Dutch senior side by coach Louis Van Gaal for the World Cup qualifiers against Gibraltar.

The 24-year-old marked his debut for the Oranje with a goal in the 6-0 win Gibraltar, after coming on as a substitute in the game.

After the game he said, Nigeria will only be an option, if he doesn’t get a chance with the Dutch national team.

”It wasn’t as it was reported. My statement was blown out of what it means,” he said after the game.

“I feel Dutch and I have always wanted to play for the team after my heart. Nigeria is a country I love but playing for them is an option I see as a fall back if I don’t get my chance here. I’m here now and I want to make it count,” he said.

Danjuma was born in Lagos, Nigeria, but relocated to Netherlands few years later. He has Nigerian mother and a Dutch father.
