Why Chelsea may be unable to trigger Olise’s release clause

Chelsea made contact with Palace on Thursday over a potential transfer for the highly-rated Englishman who can play as a right winger or attacking midfielder.

The only problem for Chelsea is that Olise is understood to have a £60m release clause – which they cannot trigger – as it only applies to Champions League clubs.

That is a worry for Chelsea given that Newcastle United and Bayern Munich have also been in contact with south London club Palace over Olise’s availability while Manchester United and Manchester City are also rumoured to be interested.

Chelsea, though, are now confident that they will not have to pay more for Olise than a Champions League club, according to The Telegraph.

That comes after new discussions with Palace amid ‘confusion’ over Olise’s release clause – and it’s important to note that Chelsea are still the favourites to land him.

Chelsea’s ‘mission’ is to agree personal terms with Olise and then for him to go to Palace and ask for the move to happen, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

Olise has conjured up a total of 16 goals and 25 assists across 90 games for Palace since he arrived at Selhurst Park from Reading in 2021.

He has long been associated with Chelsea having played in the club’s youth ranks, before he was poached by City’s academy and then ended up at Reading.
