Why Everton boss Benitez signed wing duo Gray, Townsend

Everton boss, Rafa Benitez, is delighted with their early market work.

Benitez has explained what Andros Townsend and Demarai Gray will bring to Everton after their signings were confirmed earlier this week.

The Everton manager told the club’s official YouTube channel: “Some people, they don’t know if he’s right-footed or left-footed!

“That means he can deliver with his left or right, he can play on the left or right and always I’ve said we’ve been looking for someone that can make some crosses.

“We have a striker that can be very dangerous in the air, so you have to provide deliveries.

“Andros can beat players, can make crosses and also he’s very good at set-pieces. I think he can give us experience.”

Benitez admitted that Townsend had multiple options in front of him after deciding to leave Crystal Palace this summer.

“He was very ambitious, when I talked to him he had three options,” the boss remarked.

“He was waiting, he wanted to stay in the Premier League and believed Everton was a great challenge.

“This is very positive to us, to have experience and still he wants to improve and be better. I wanted us to be sure we have something that can guarantee, if we have injuries or problems, that we can have a balanced squad.

“After that we can try to be more ambitious and look for more options, and maybe players that can make a difference.”

On Gray, he added: “My job now is to keep pushing him in a nice way to be more consistent. He knows that, and he wants to impress.

“These players can give us something maybe this team was missing last year.

“Hopefully both can do well and help the team.

“They need to be consistent. Wingers can sometimes be really, really good – and sometimes disappear. With him, one of the challenges is to be sure he can give us something extra.”
