Why Indian outfit snubbed Obafemi Martins for Gyan

Obafemi Martins

Indian outfit, Northeast United has overlooked former Nigeria international Obafemi Martins following the club’s signing of Ghana legend Asamoah Gyan on a free transfer after the end of his contract with Kayserispor of Turkey in summer 2019.

The 33-year-old striker is the Black Stars’ all-time leading scorer with 51 goals after earning 106 caps for his country. He has also represented them in three World Cups as well as six Africa Cup of Nations tournaments.

Gyan is coming of a season spent in the Turkish Super Lig with Kayserispor where he played in 17 matches scoring four goals and not registering any assists.

With Bartholomeu Ogbeche leaving for Kerala Blasters after an incredible last season where he scored 18 goals in 12 appearances, NEUFC were reportedly left with a choice between Gyan and Obafemi Martins but they opted for the veteran Ghanaian top scorer.

Incidentally, Gyan comes as a replacement for Martins’ compatriot, Ogbeche.  “I know Asamoah from the time he played in Udinese, he was a big star in Serie A. He has played three World Cups and played for many clubs around the world,” Northeast United coach Robert Jarni said.
