Wuhua four-nation tournament: Super Falcons thrashed, to play Romania

Nigeria’s Super Falcons were thrashed 0-3 by China’s Steel Roses in their first game of the Wuhua four-nation tournament held at the Huitang Stadium, Meizhou Wuhua, China.

Midfielder Zhang Rui scored the first goal in the 10th minute after Falcon’s goalkeeper Tochukwu Oluehi had parried Gu Yasha’s free-kick before Li Ying bagged a brace in the 65th and 92nd minutes to complete a miserable day for the nine –time African champions.

The Falcons arrived for the Four-Nation without immediate past African Player of the Year, Asisat Oshoala, as well as left back Ngozi Ebere and power forward Desire Oparanozie and their absence was clearly felt on the pitch.

Nigeria will face Romania in Sunday’s third place match which will begin at 3pm China time (8am Nigeria time). The Romanians also lost their first match to Korea Republic by three goals to nil on Thursday.

Korea Republic will face China in the final of the tournament which serves as part of the Falcon’s preparations for this year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup in France this summer, where they will take on Norway, Korea Republic as well as the hosts in the group stages.
