Youth African Games: Nigeria wins volleyball gold

Nigeria defeated Egypt 3-2 (25-23, 14-25, 25-23, 14-25, 16-14) in the final to claim gold in the Boys Volleyball event at the ongoing Youth African Games in Algiers, Algeria.

Nigeria led in the first set, using the Egyptian defensive mistakes. Egypt dominated completely the second set to win widely 25-14.

Again, Nigeria was superior in the third set to lead 2-1 before Egypt again regain their attacking strategy to draw 2-2.

The Nigerian players were more stable in the tiebreak to win 16-14 after epic performance to capture their first title since 2003.

After the final, CAVB President Dr Amr Elwani accompanied with the guests of honour led by the Algerian Olympic Committee President Mustapha Beraf to honour the winners with the gold medals and the African Cup as the competition also doubles as the 2018 Boys U19 African Nations Championship.

With the victory, Nigeria has qualified for the 2019 FIVB Volleyball Boys’ U19 World Championship in Iran.

Tunisia boys took on hosts Algeria 3-0 (25-16, 28-26, 25-14) in the bronze medal match. Tunisia concluded the competition in the third place leaving Algeria in the fourth place.
