75 universities to lock horns at NUGA-UNILAG 2022

 

A total of 75 universities are expected to take part in the 26th edition of the Nigerian Universities Games Association (NUGA) sporting events to be hosted by the University of Lagos (UNILAG.

The university’s Vice-Chancellor, Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, disclosed this during the special edition of the UNILAG WALK FOR LIFE which was organized to create awareness for the event scheduled for the 16th – 27th of March 2022 at the University’s Sports Centre.

“This is just to create awareness within the community concerning the hosting of NUGA games. We are bringing new life into NUGA games activities and this was started four weeks ago. This is the third session we are having this exercise so that the  community will be carried along concerning the NUGA games,” Mr Ogundipe  said.

He added that the preparations to host a befitting NUGA games are in top gear, stressing that the University is ready to host and win.

“We have only one option which is option A; which means we are hosting the NUGA games. And we are hosting to win,” he maintained.

Since the maiden edition which was hosted by the University of Ibadan in 1966, the UNILAG is having the opportunity to host the event for the fourth time.

He said: “The difference between UNILAG 2022 and the previous editions is the larger number of students and universities registered for the games. 75 universities have registered to participate in sixteen sporting activities that will be available during the competition.

“For the first time, there is a torch of unity that we have taken to some of the alumni of the university.

Speaking about the facilities to be used for the games, the VC added: “I want to assure you that the swimming pool will be the best in the country. If you look at the cricket pitch, football pitch, basketball court as well as volleyball court they are the best. I want to assure you that all the facilities we have on ground for the games are world class.”

Sixteen games namely: Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Chess, Cricket, Football, Handball, Hockey, Judo, Scrabble, Squash, Swimming, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Tennis and Volleyball are on parade.
