ACOLOP president Filomena Fortes receives Torch-Bearer Award

Filomena Fortes, president of the Association of Portuguese Language Olympic Committees has been awarded the Torch-Bearer Award by the Sri Chinmoy Oneness-Home Peace Run.

Fortes was awarded the prestigious medal to recognise her pioneering path and contribution to peace and the well-being of society on 25 April last year. Not only does she serve as a symbol of sport and Olympism, but above all, she is a great example of inspiration for all women and young athletes in Cape Verde and Africa and around the world, according to the Peace Run’s website.

A former handball player, Fortes taught physical education before becoming president of the Cape Verdean Handball Federation. In 2014, she became the first woman to become president of the Cape Verdean Olympic Committee.

Since 2019, she has been an active member of several committees in the International Olympic Committee including Future Host Commission for the Games of the Olympiad and Sustainability and Legacy. Fortes also represents the IOC on the board of the World Anti-Doping Agency.

The 58-year-old was joined by Cape Verdean Olympic Committee team members as she proudly accepted the Torch-Bearer Award.

“I thank you and promise to continue to spread peace, using sport as a vehicle for the union of the people and the promotion of local and world peace,” said Fortes.
