AFCON q-finals: Morocco not afraid of Egypt, says Atlas Lions goalkeeper

Morocco national team goalkeeper, Yassine Bounou, has said they were fully prepared to tackle Egypt in the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Cameroon.

The Atlas Lions booked their place in the last eight following a 2-1 victory against hard-fighting Malawi in the Round of 16.

Malawi took the lead when Orlando Pirates striker Gabadinho Mhango found the target in the seventh minute but Morocco equalized through Youssef En-Nesyri’s header in the 45th minute before right-back Achraf Hakimi grabbed the winner 20 minutes before the full-time whistle.

Egypt on the other hand advanced to the quarter-finals after beating Ivory Coast in a thrilling penalty shoot-out, in a game that saw brilliant performances from The Pharaohs.

The quarter-finals clash between the two rivals is scheduled to take place next Sunday, 30 January at the Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium in Yaounde.

Speaking on the upcoming confrontation, Bounou said: “We only focus on ourselves, and we are always working on developing and improving.

“We are prepared to face any opponents in the Africa Cup of Nations.”

It’s worth noting that Egypt’s last clash with Morocco was in the quarter-finals of the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations, when Egypt came on top 1-0 through Kahraba’s late winner.
