AFCON U-20: Impressive Gambia warns Nigeria after dismantling South Sudan

Young Scorpions of Gambia have sent a serious warning to the Flying Eagles ahead of Monday’s U20 AFCON semifinal after they dismantled South Sudan in style.

Gambia, who finished third at the 2021 U20 AFCON, easily dismissed debutants South Sudan 5-0 today to set up an intriguing semifinal against the Flying Eagles.

Both Nigeria and Gambia clashed at this level in 2011 with the Flying Eagles winning 2-0 on their way to the championship in South Africa.

The Gambians now stand between Nigeria and a record-extending eighth U20 AFCON title in Egypt.

Their physicality and athletic prowess will challenge the Flying Eagles at the Cairo International Stadium Monday evening.

Central defender and captain Alaige Saine was named in the Tournament Best XI of the group stage after he scored in the team’s first three games and bagged two Man of the Match Awards.

Striker Adama Bojang scored a hat-trick to get Gambia going today.

Gambia opened their Group C with a 1-0 win over Tunisia, before they beat Zambia 2-0 and then pipped Benin 1-0 to record a perfect nine points in the first round of the competition.

They are yet to concede a single goal in Egypt.
