Al Ahly battle for African tittle

Reigning African champions, Al Ahly were held to a goalless stalemate at the 5 July 1962 stadium Algiers on Friday, 16 February in their TotalEnergies CAF Champions League fixture against Algeria’s CR Belouizdad.

The two sides clashed in the only fixture of the week as a result of Ahly’s FIFA Club World Cup schedule that resulted in them having to postpone their Match Day fixture against the Algerians.

With both sides walking away with a vital point, the group remains wide open with two rounds of fixtures to go before the top two finishers are decided for the knockout phase of the competition.

Ahly maintain their top spot with six points, followed by CR Belouizdad and Young Africans who are equally tied on five points. Bottom of the group is Ghana’s Medeama who are just two points away from the log leaders.

Both CR Belouizdad and Ahly are now on par with the rest of the 16 clubs in the group stage and will resume the competition schedule next weekend with some appetizing fixtures as Africa’s premier club competition makes an exciting return.

The Algerians will be away to Young Africans who are tied on 5 points with them, while the Ahly travel to Ghana to face Medeama who are bottom of the group but could easily go to the summit should they overcome the reigning champions at home.
