Allardyce banked £1,389-a-minute with one point to show

Sam Allardyce may have failed to keep Leeds United in the Premier League, but his four-game stint was certainly a worthwhile exercise for his bank balance.

Following the sacking of Jesse Marsch and then interim manager Javi Garcia, ‘Fireman Sam’ was jettisoned into the role for the remaining games in a desperate bid to keep the Elland Road club in the top-flight.

However, despite a battling defeat in his first game at Manchester City, Leeds managed just one point with Allardyce at the helm, with a 4-1 defeat at home to Tottenham confirming their return to the Championship after three years in the top-flight.

Allardyce would have picked up a massive bonus of £2.5m had he kept Leeds up. While he missed out on that, he was still reputedly paid £500,000 for his month at the helm. That equates to £1,389 per minute across the four games.

Despite those colossal numbers, the former Bolton boss admitted he hasn’t enjoyed his time at Elland Road. He said: “I can’t say I’ve enjoyed it. I’m glad I came back. I tried my best to get Leeds out of trouble, but I can’t enjoy anything when I don’t win.

“We didn’t leave a stone unturned and it’s really sad that Leeds is in this position and to the fans, I apologise that I didn’t do better and the players didn’t do better.”

Leeds issued a statement shortly after the game also apologising to the club’s supporters for a “painful” relegation. It read: “We apologise to our fanbase that the performances this season have not seen the club consolidate our status as we had all hoped.
