Aribo highlights Eagles’ defensive discipline ahead Cameroon clash

With four games still to be played in the group stage, Nigeria have the joint-best defensive record in the tournament along with defending champions Senegal, Morocco and Mali, having conceded one goal.

Five-time champions Cameroon set up a meeting with Nigeria in the last 16 after two late goals to beat the Gambia 3-2 in another amazing game in what has been extra special tournament so far.

Manager Jose Peseiro has set up his team hard to beat in the last two matches but fans and pundits have been far from impressed with their offensive performance, having netted only once from open play in the group stage.

Joe Aribo is impressed with the Super Eagles defensive solidity and is aware that they have to be efficient in attack in the knockout rounds.

“I know as the tournament progresses, we’ll find the back of the net a lot more. One thing about us is that we are doing very well, keeping clean sheets and we’re strong and solid at the back,” Aribo told reporters in the mixed zone after Monday’s win versus Guinea-Bissau.

“I feel good. It’s always an honour for me to represent Nigeria, represent my country so it’s a good feeling.”

Aribo made his first start of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in the Super Eagles’ 1-0 win over Guinea-Bissau, lasting 63 minutes on the pitch before making way for Alex Iwobi.
