Arsenal 1-1 Liverpool: Iwobi produces magical assist in Gunners’ draw

Alex Iwobi came off the bench to help Arsenal secure a difficult 1-1 draw against Liverpool at the Emirates on Saturday.

The Super Eagles midfielder started the game on the bench following a below par performance in the 2-2 draw against Crystal Palace last weekend.

An eventful first half saw Liverpool hit the post twice, a goal ruled out and a penalty call not given – the Gunners also had a goal ruled out for offside and a penalty shout not given by referee Andre Marriner.

However, it was the Reds that took the lead in the second half when Arsenal goalkeeper, Bernd Leno fumed Saido Mane’s cross and the ball fell on the path of James Milner and the England man rifled a right foot shot into the bottom right corner of the net.

Unai Emery reacted by throwing Alex Iwobi into the thick of action as he replaced former Manchester United midfielder, Henrikh Mkhitaryan. The Nigerian immediately made an impact as he increased the energy level of the Gunners and produced a magical pass to put Alexandre Lacazette through on goal and he calmly slotted the ball past Alisson in goal for the Reds to end the game 1-1.

“It was a difficult game from both attacking teams but it was a good match. We gave it extra work and everyone put in more because our coach demands that,” Iwobi said after the match.

Liverpool moves top of the premier league table with 27 points but Manchester City may reclaim top spot if they beat Southampton at the Etihad on Sunday, while Arsenal sit fourth with 23points.
