Australia 2-1 Nigeria: Botic’s brace sink Eaglets as Joeys make history

The Golden Eaglets of Nigeria suffered their first defeat of the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Brazil after they were beaten 2-1 by Australia in the last Group B match played at the Estadio Bezerrão, Brasilia tonight. It was the Aussies’ first win against the Eaglets after seven meetings.

Like their previous two matches, the Eaglets dominated possession in the opening stages of the encounter but it was Australia that took the lead in the 14th minute courtesy of Noah Botic.
Nigeria went in search of the equaliser with Quadri Edun getting in a strike which was off target in the 15th minute and a minute later Peter Olawale broke free in but his strike went wide of the post.
Olawale however grabbed the equaliser in the 21st minute to give Nigerians another hope of their usual comeback.
Nicknamed Joeys, Australians went ahead again after Romanian referee Istvan Kovacs awarded them a penalty which Botic smashed in to score his brace.

The Eaglets made frantic efforts to level scores but the Australian held on to secure their first victory of the tournament.
