Banyana maintain 100% record at WAFCON 2022

Banyana Banyana made it three wins from three games in Group C at the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after picking up a 1-0 win over Botswana on Sunday night.

Captain Janine Van Wyk returned for Banyana for her 181st cap, but Robyn Moodaly was reduced to the bench on the back of a brilliant performance against Burundi.

The South Africans didn’t take long to get settled and find their own as a snap shot from a smart angle in the six-yard area from Thembi Kgatlana had their adversaries on the edge.

Botswana give little away during the course of the earlier exchanges and were presented with their first shot in anger where Refilwe Tholakele snapped a loose pass well wide.

As the match waged on, Banyana were required to make a substitution two minutes to the half-hour mark as Jermaine Seoposenwe went crashing down and was replaced by Melinda Kgadiete.

The closing couple of minutes filtered into a tight encounter where few amount of clear-cut opportunities from the two rose to the fore front.

With the second half off the mark, Banyana Banyana issued yet another introduction from the substitution bench as Thalea Smidt replaced Karabo Dhlamini.

Banyana, who had already qualified to the quarter-finals following their win over Burundi, continued to plug away in keen pursuit of a breakthrough however found Botswana tough to crack down.

Desiree Ellis’s side maintained the lion’s share of play in the last 10 minutes and ultimately went ahead as second-half substitute Nthabiseng Majiya bagged her first goal in just her second outing for Banyana.

The South African targeted a second with full-time on the horizon, but had done enough to emerge victorious and in the process collected three consecutive wins in Group C.
