Barcelona react to no Ballon d’Or this year reports
Barcelona think that everyone knows who the best player in the world is anyway after reports emerged on Monday, July 20, that no one will be awarded the Ballon d’Or this year.
Interestingly, it is the first time since 1956, the Ballon d’Or won’t be given to the world’s best male footballer, with France Football saying 2020 could not be seen as an ‘ordinary year.’
Many have suggested that Robert Lewandowski is the player hardest done to without the award this year but Barcelona believe that Lionel Messi is still the best, and they’ve let everyone know with their reaction to the news.
Barca haven’t had a great year so far and failed to defend their La Liga title, seeing rivals Real Madrid over take them after the return of football and be named Spanish champions.
The team were leading the title when they sacked Ernesto Valverde in January, after losing in the Spanish Supercopa, and are now relying on the Champions League to win any silverware this season.
However, despite the poor season, Messi has continued to impress and finished the season as La Liga’s top scorer for a record seventh time, scoring 25 goals in 33 league games.
His 21 assists this season also broke the record of most assists in a single season in Spain, taking the previous record away from former teammate Xavi.
Lewandowski helped Bayern Munich to an eighth league title in-a-row and then doubled up with the German Cup, and they’re currently favourites to make it a treble with the Champions League.
The Polish striker is also waiting to see if he’ll be named the European Golden Shoe winner. His 34 league goals this season has him leading the way, with only two men capable of beating him.
Lazio’s Ciro Immobile and Juventus’ Cristiano Ronaldo are on 29 and 28 goals respectively with another five league games of the Serie A season to go.

Messi and Ronaldo shared the award 10 times between them uninterrupted until Luka Modric ended their run in 2018 but Messi made it 6-5 to him against his rival by regaining it last year.
This might have been his final chance to win it as a Barca player as according to reports he’s ready to walk out on the Catalan giants next year.
