Battered Conor McGregor insists there will be rematch

Conor McGregor has shown off the battered right leg he sustained during his explosive defeat by Dustin Poirier  and also revealed there will be a third fight between the two superstars.

The Notorious was sent crashing down in the second round on Fight Island on Saturday night – with Poirier opting to attack his front leg in a ferocious barrage and eventually inflicting McGregor’s first ever knockout loss.

And after revealing his grizzly swelling was soon the size of an ‘American football’, McGregor took to Instagram to post a photo of himself with an elevated leg and hailed Poirier.

His highly-anticipated UFC return had spectacularly fallen flat in Abu Dhabi after another year spent in retirement.

Poirier managed to ride out the fast start from McGregor in the first round and even landed an early takedown.

His assault on McGregor’s lead leg then quickly took its toll – with his opponent notably struggling with his movement and being forced backwards.

A devastating uppercut and strong right hook from Poirier delivered the crucial blows, with referee Herb Dean stepping in to wave off the contest.

McGregor was found in a positive mood the morning after his setback, however, and is relishing the prospect of a trilogy showdown.

Alongside the Instagram photo, he wrote: ‘Thanks for the support everyone! Was not my night/morning in there but a great contest to improve on.
