Bayern’s bid for German dominance ends with embarrassing 5-0 cup loss to Monchengladbach

Bayern Munich were sensationally thrashed 5-0 by Borussia Moenchengladbach as they suffered their heaviest ever defeat in the German Cup.

Gladbach made a dream start as they raced into an early three-goal lead inside 21 minutes thanks to Kouadio Kone and a brace from Ramy Bensebaini, the second from the penalty spot.

Bayern had to wait until the 35th minute to have a shot on goal – but their attempted revival would not last long.

Breel Embolo made it four moments after halftime and then got his second six minutes later to send Gladbach into dreamland.

And full-strength Bayern, who included Robert Lewandowski and Serge Gnabry amongst their ranks, had goalkeeper Manuel Neuer to thank for keeping the score at five.

They are the first team to score five goals against Bayern Munich since Borussia Dortmund’s 5-2 win in the 2012 German Cup final.

And they also became the first team ever to score three times in the first 21 minutes against Bayern in a German Cup game.

It was also their heaviest overall defeat since 1978.

Stunned Bayern sports director Hasan Salihamidzic said afterwards: “I am absolutely shocked.

“We were just not there. We did not win a single tackle or challenge in the entire first half.

“Everything that could go wrong went wrong. Gladbach did it really well.

“We were absolutely not there. A blackout. It should not have happened to us in such a way.”
