Bologna and Fiorentina relaunch UCL bids

Bologna and Fiorentina got their bids for Champions League football back on track on Sunday with comfortable Serie A wins over Lecce and Frosinone.

Thiago Motta’s Bologna are separated from fourth-placed Atalanta by goal difference after strolling past Lecce 4-0, with Riccardo Orsolini netting either side of halftime after Sam Beukema tapped home the opener.

Jens Odgaard rounded off the scoring with eight minutes remaining, tucking home his first Bologna goal in confident fashion.

Bologna have won their two most recent fixtures after a four-match winless streak which looked to have harmed their top four hopes.

Two points behind Bologna and Atalanta in seventh are Fiorentina, who claimed their first league win of 2024 by thrashing sorry Frosinone 5-1 in Florence.

Andrea Belotti opened the scoring in the 16th minute, his first goal for Fiorentina since signing from Roma earlier this month.

Jonathan Ikone and Lucas Martinez Quarta then gave the hosts a three-goal halftime lead before Nicolas Gonzalez and Antonin Barak completed the rout to snap a run of three defeats and a draw since the turn of the year.

Atalanta are at Genoa later on Sunday before Napoli take on third-placed AC Milan at the San Siro.
