Boxing: Tyson Fury, Anthony Joshua Cardiff fight is off

Tyson Fury has said the fight between him and Anthony Joshua is off because AJ missed the deadline to sign the contract offer.

Cardiff looked set to host a money-spinning heavyweight bout between two giants of the sport in this country, with the heavyweight title set to go on the line on December 3.

Joshua’s camp had publicly confirmed all terms of Fury’s deal have been accepted, with the champion previously saying the offer to fight at the Principality Stadium on December 3 had been made.

Fury’s promoter, Frank Warren, then confirmed the contract to officially rubberstamp the fight is on its way to Joshua’s team soon. Fury had publicly offered Joshua three dates to meet before the end of the year and he has suggested the challenger gets 40 per cent of the purse.

Joshua said on Sunday he would sign the contract to fight Fury after the WBC champion issued an ultimatum to get it done by 5pm on Monday or he would walk away from the deal.

And on Monday evening, Fury took to Instagram again to say no signed contract had been sent back and that any hopes of a fight with Joshua taking place were “officially over”.

Fury said: “Well, guys, it’s official. D-Day has come and gone. It’s gone past five o’clock on Monday, no contract has been signed.

“It’s officially over for Joshua. He is now out in the cold with the wolf pack, forget about it. Idiot. Coward!”

He added: “I always knew you didn’t have the minerals to fight the Gypsy King. Good luck with your career, and your life.”

Joshua had said on Sunday: “It’s not in my hands, it’s with the legal team. That’s why you hire lawyers. You know the history of boxing, make sure you get your legal terms right.

“Of course, I’m going to sign a contract. It’s just with some lawyers at the minute.”
