Bulgaria FA Chief finally resigns after racist abuse

President of Bulgarian FA Borislav Mikhailov on Tuesday resigned following racial abuses aimed at England’s players in Monday’s European Qualifier in Sofia.

England’s black players and backroom staff were subjected to abuse from home fans at various stages during their 6-0 win over Bulgaria, with the referee bringing proceedings to a halt twice in the first period as he actioned Uefa racism protocol.

The prime minister of Bulgaria, who strongly condemned the abuse on social media, called on Mihaylov to stand down earlier on Tuesday.

A statement later confirmed: “Today Bulgarian FA president Borislav Mihaylov has resigned from his position – his resignation letter will be presented to the members of the FA’s Executive Committee at this Friday’s gathering.

“Mihaylov’s position comes following the pressure that has been generated over the last few days; the situation is not positive neither for Bulgarian football nor the Football Union itself.
