CAF Champions League: Akpeyi’s Chiefs get date to tackle Wydad

Daniel Akpeyi’s Kaizer Chiefs will take on Wydad Casablanca in their re-arranged African Champions League tie in Cairo on Friday after the Confederation of African Football ordered the Moroccan club to find an alternate venue in a neutral country.

Egypt have agreed to the match being played at the Assalam Stadium in Cairo, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation said on its website on Monday.

The Group C match was scheduled for Casablanca last Saturday, at the start of the group phase but Moroccan authorities refused to allow the South African club to enter the country over concern about a spread of the Covid-19 virus.

The South Africa variant of the novel coronavirus has been described as highly contagious and travel from the country to many countries worldwide has been banned.

CAF ordered Wydad to organize the game at a neutral venue but gave them just the weekend to sort our arrangements and said the game must be played by Saturday, February 20.

Chiefs, who are making their first appearance in the group phase of the Champions League, will likely have to postpone their DStv Premiership clash with AmaZulu at Soccer City on Wednesday in order to travel to Cairo.

Horoya of Guinea beat Petro Atletico of Angola 2-0 on Saturday in the opening group game.
