Cavani’s phone call asking to leave Man Utd due to lack of playing time

Edinson Cavani made moves to join Boca Juniors back in January by calling club chief Juan Roman Riquelme.

The Manchester Unitred striker moved to Old Trafford when his PSG contract expired last summer, penning a one-year deal.

Originally though he struggled for minutes and was only used sporadically by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer during the first half of the 2020-21 season.

Halfway through his time in Manchester, Cavani was looking to leave and Boca were high on his list of desired locations.

The Argentine club were keen to have him and the player himself was open to the switch, having grown frustrated at his lack of opportunities.

However, a two-goal cameo changed the landscape and Cavani began getting more minutes as he grew in importance, which eventually saw him stay put.

“In January, Cavani called me saying that he wanted to come because he was playing little there,” Riquelme told TNT Sports.

“I’ve been speaking with him for a long time and he called me in January to come because he wasn’t playing there. I remember we talked one day and the next day he came in and scored two goals in the last minutes.

“He made a comeback. From then on he started scoring goals in all the games and they renewed with him.”

Cavani, who scored 17 times in all competitions during his debut season, eventually signed on for a further year too, again snubbing a switch to Argentina in the summer.

Competition for places at Old Trafford has grown however with the arrivals of Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho.

Mason Greenwood, Marcus Rashford, Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard, Bruno Fernandes and Anthony Martial are also eyeing starts in attack, which is limiting game time for several players.

Thus, Cavani has started two of United’s 10 Premier League games as a result.

And Riquelme has not given up hope that the Uruguayan will eventually move to Boca, which could happen this summer when his deal expires.
