Chelsea crowned Women’s Super League champions after Reading win

Chelsea were crowned Women’s Super League champions after they beat Reading 5-0 on Sunday to move one step closer to a quadruple.

Fran Kirby starred again as the Blues produced a five-star display on the final day of the season to clinch the WSL title for a second successive year.

Manchester City went into the final round of matches with hopes of leapfrogging Chelsea but a ruthless display at Kingsmeadow ended any hope of that.

A goal from Melanie Leupolz after just 68 seconds settled any serves there might have been and a brace from Kirby either side of half put the Blues in complete control.

Sam Kerr added a fourth with a goal that ensured the Australian star finished the season as the top scorer in the WSL, and Erin Cuthbert sealed victory late on.

Chelsea won the League Cup in March and last weekend reached their first ever Champions League Final in what could be an historic season under Emma Hayes.

Chelsea play Barcelona in the Champions League Final in Sweden next Sunday, face Everton in the fifth round of the FA Cup and remain on course to emulate Arsenal, who became the first and only English side to win a quadruple of major trophies in 2007.
