Chelsea sure of Mason’s bounce back for Carabao

Chelsea remain hopeful that Mason Mount will return from injury in time to face Liverpool in the Carabao Cup on Sunday afternoon.

The midfielder was forced off injured during the first half of Chelsea’s victory over Palmerias in the Club World Cup final last week.

After watching Chelsea overcome the Brazilian side in extra-time, Mount returned to the pitch with heavy strapping on his right ankle to celebrate with his team-mates.

Chelsea reached the final of the Carabao Cup by beating London rivals Tottenham over two legs. As a result, the Blues will head into their fifth cup final under Thomas Tuchel on Sunday.

The London based club will be looking to field a full-strength squad to maintain their Cup final winning streak – having only ever lost Leicester City in a showpiece event under the German manager.

Chelsea were worried they would be without Mount of the upcoming final, but Goal have reported that the 23-year-old could return to the squad in time for the all-important fixture.

The England international is said to be taking part in Thomas Tuchel’s squad training session later today and could be used on Sunday afternoon.

However, Tuchel is also said to be sweating over the fitness of Cesar Azpilicueta and Callum Hudson-Odoi for the coming week.

The Chelsea manager confirmed that Azpilicueta had suffered a groin injury and that Hudson-Odoi had an issue with his Achilles.

Nevertheless, Tuchel remains hopeful that the pair will return to action for Tuesday’s Champions League clash with Lille.

However, it is unlikely that Mount will make it back in time for the mid-week fixture at Stamford Bridge. Therefore, he is aiming for the Carabao final instead.
