Chilwell out of England game against Denmark

Chelsea left-back, Ben Chilwell, has been withdrawn from the England squad to face Denmark in the UEFA Nations League tomorrow night, with the FA confirming that former Tottenham Hotspur full-back Kieran Tripper has also left the squad.

Chilwell missed last week’s friendly with Wales after a breach of coronavirus protocols having attended Tammy Abraham’s birthday part along with Jadon Sancho and did not feature in the 2-1 win Belgium on Sunday because of illness.

He did, however, link up with Gareth Southgate’s squad that evening only to aggravate the foot injury that saw him miss the start of the season.

“Ben reported to the hotel today,” Southgate said after the 2-1 win over Belgium. “He did a training session on his own. We’ve just got to assess where he’s at because he hasn’t been able to train through the week.

“So, there’s a little bit of assessment needed over the next couple of days but he is with the group now.”

A decision has since been taken to leave him out of the squad that will face the Danes at Wembley tomorrow night.

An FA statement read: “Ben Chilwell and Kieran Tripper have left the England camp and will not be available for the UEFA Nations League fixture against Denmark on Wednesday. That leaves 28 players for consideration for Gareth Southgate’s 23-man matchday squad.”

Chilwell has been suffering from plantar fascia issues since early summer and, speaking to football.london at the beginning of this month he explained why there was a need to be cautious.

“Obviously with a plantar fascia injury it’s one of those things you can’t come back too quickly because it aggravates it,” he said.

“It’s been frustrating because you want to play and when you join a new football club you want to train and play straight away and help the team.”

Chelsea’s Abraham, Mason Mount and Reece James are part of the 28-man group, although the former failed to make the 23 against Belgium on Sunday, a game in which Mount scored the winning goal.
