City get huge injury boost as star striker returns to training

Sergio Aguero trained with his teammates on Monday, February 8, as Manchester City received more good news after their huge 4-1 win over Liverpool on Sunday.

The Argentine striker has seen injury and illness severely disrupt his season so far, restricting him to just 141 minutes of Premier League football this campaign.

Aguero was hampered by knee and hamstring injuries earlier in the season, but had overcome those and looked set to return to action in January.

However, after first having to isolate due to coming into contact with someone who tested positive for Covid-19, the 32-year-old then contracted the virus himself, forcing him to spend yet more time away from the pitch.

Manchester City’s record scorer has fully recovered now though, and trained on Monday with those who were also not involved at Anfield on the weekend.

Aguero has scored just twice this season, both in the Champions League, and Pep Guardiola looked to be missing the striker as City struggled to find their top form at the start of the campaign.

But Guardiola’s side have now won 14 games in a row in all competitions, scoring 37 goals in that run and conceding four.

The potential return of Aguero in the near future will only add to the good feeling currently running through the club, and will provide a boost ahead of a big month of fixtures.

City face Tottenham, Everton, Arsenal, and Manchester City in the league in the next four weeks, as well a Champions League Round of 16 first-leg with with Borussia Monchengladbach and an FA Cup clash with Swansea.

Gabriel Jesus, City’s other recognised striker, as struggled for minutes himself in recent weeks, with Guardiola finding a successful formula with the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva, and Phil Foden all playing at times in the false nine position.

And while Aguero’s long-term future remains uncertain – his contract at the club runs out at the end of the season – City will be hoping he has a major part to play between now and then as they continue to look strong in all four competitions.
