Coronavirus: UEFA’s mega-money demand to clubs to postpone Euro 2020

UEFA will demand a fee of around £275m as they look to be compensated by clubs and leagues around Europe should they postpone Euro 2020.

European’s governing body have asked leading officials from around the continent to attend a meeting as they look to deal with the coronavirus pandemic.

This summer’s tournament is set to be delayed by 12 months but UEFA will make it clear to football’s stakeholders the financial implications of the decision, reports the Athletic.

Leagues around Europe want the time to ensure they can finish their current seasons.

All major leagues have postponed fixtures for the foreseeable futures with the Premier League aiming to return, albeit ambitiously, in early April.

Despite the Covid-19 outbreak bringing much uncertainty there is hope that leagues can be concluded by June.

Euro 2020 was due to start on June 12 in Rome, which in itself was contentious given how Italy has been among the worst affected of all European nations.

Tuesday’s meeting will take place with video conferencing facilities.

Also on the agenda will be how to conclude this season’s Champions League and Europa League with the last 16 not yet completed of the former.

The first meeting will include UEFA officials, the ECA and EL boards and a representative of players union FIFPro before it is followed by another meeting between UEFA and its 55 member associations, including the English FA.

Former Italy boss Marcelo Lippi has made it cleat he does not think Euro 2020 nor the Olympics should go ahead.

“I don’t understand how one can think of playing the European Championships in June or the Olympics in Asia, Japan, between July and August: how to say the day after tomorrow.

“Fortunately, UEFA has finally decided to suspend the cups, and I think it will be the same for the Europeans: at the limit, let’s play them next year but not now, not at all costs and who knows how, who knows where.”
