Cricket: West Indies frustrate England to earn draw in first Test

England can only draw the first Test match with West Indies after failing to dismiss their hosts during the final 71 overs of the contest.

Earlier on Saturday, Joe Root posted his 24th century and Dan Lawrence hit a lively 37 to take England to 349-6, Root declaring to set West Indies a total of 287.

The home side were showing little intent to chase down a target which felt out of their reach, and England did not make the breakthrough until the 26th over.

Ben Stokes took that wicket, removing Kraigg Brathwaite for 33, with the dismissal instigating a productive spell of bowling from Jack Leach who took three wickets to reduce West Indies to 67-4.

With 36 overs still remaining, the momentum was with England, but Nkrumah Bonner and Jason Holder were able to resist everything which was thrown at them on a pitch which was offering little.

Bonner ended with 38 off 138 deliveries, with Holder contributing 37 from 101 balls, and Root eventually decided to shake hands on a draw with five balls left, West Indies 140 runs still short of their target.
