Croatia breaks Russia’s hearts to set up England semi final clash

Croatia on Saturday defeated Russia on penalties in Sochi to set up a FIFA World Cup semi final clash against England next Wednesday.

Bracelona forward Ivan Rakitic converted the winning spot kick after scores had ended 2-2 in extra time.

Russia midfielder Denis Cheryshev scored the opener in the 31st minute which was his fourth goal of the tournament.

A few minutes before half time, Andrej Kramaric equalised for Croatia.

The match went into extra time with Croatia defender Domagoj Vida giving his side the lead in the 101st minute. A decent header that was directed towards the bottom corner, which beat goalkeeper and Russia captain Akinfeev.

Fourteen minutes later Mario Fernandes got Russia’s equaliser to send the match into penalties.

Feder Smolov and Fernandes both missed from the spot.

The semi final clash is scheduled for Moscow’s Luzhinki Stadium .
